The first printings can be identified by the ship illustration in the middle of the copyright page and very dark navy blue textured boards. Also, the inserted map is folded with the printing on the inside. The more common subsequent printings put the ship illustration at the top of the copyright page and have smooth middle-blue boards. The later printings have the inserted map folded with the printing on the outside. A second edition (stated) of the book was published in paperback by the Eakin Press in 1996.

About half of the book is devoted to the demise of the 1554 Spanish fleet in a hurricane and the subsequent efforts to salvage its treasure. It includes the entire journal of Fray Marcos de Mena, one of the 1554 Fleet survivors. Interestingly, the fly on the dust jacket refers to this as a “180 page book”…but in fact, it only has 139 pages.
