Category: Underwater Archaeology
Keywords: Looe, Jane and Barney Crile
Comments: Pamphlet; includes a bibliography; illustrated
Size: 6″ x 9.25″

Editions: The first edition (not stated) of this pamphlet was published by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC (Publication # 4224) in 1955. I believe the true first edition has a tan cover. There is also a slightly smaller version of the pamphlet with a blue cover and identical contents…but I suspect this is a reprint. This pamphlet is now available as a “print-on-demand” paperback book.
Description: This pamphlet tells the story of the author’s trip to the Florida Keys with Barney Crile (see Crile, Jane and Barney, “Treasure Diving Holidays”; #C-2480) to excavate the “HMS Looe”, which sank in 1743. Subsequent research has shown that Peterson and Crile had the wrong “Looe”. The ship they excavated was sunk as a breakwater in Sheeringham, UK, in 1737.
